Well, I make analogy is not perfect because make is part of the OS, but
gmake is a good example:
/usr/ports/Mk/bsd.port.mk:
# USE_GMAKE - Says that the port uses gmake.
# GMAKE - Set to path of GNU make if not in $PATH (default: gmake).
