Not knowing what jot(1) was, I read the man page. The synopsis says:

SYNOPSIS
     jot [-cnr] [-b word] [-w word] [-s string] [-p precision] [reps [begin
                                                               ^
         [end [s]]]]
                   ^

...so I type in:

$ jot
usage: jot [-cnr] [-b word] [-w word] [-s string] [-p precision]
           [reps [begin [end [s]]]]
           ^                      ^

Is my understanding correct that options in square brackets are optional?
