In case /home/bruce/.DCOPserver_deimos.phobos.com:0 exists, have you tried
deleting it and trying again? I remember that sometimes KDE (before 2.2.2,
at least) left some (temporary) files lying around, which would prevent it
to start properly. Simply deleting these files often helped.
