After installing 4.0-RELEASE I again have problems getting vat and the
sound driver to work together.

AFAICS I got the newpcm to work. In the kernel configuration I have

	device pcm
	device sbc

while booting I get

I can play .au-files by writing them to /dev/audio. However, when I try to
start vat (v4.0b2 from packages or ports) I only get:

So what am I doing wrong?
Any help appreciated...
