Oh, -q documents it pretty explicitly, it just spells "printable" as "graph=
ic"
so my search didn't find it:

     -q      Force printing of non-graphic characters in file names as the
             character =E2=80=98?=E2=80=99; this is the default when output=
 is to a terminal.
