Thanks for all the fine ideas and kind responses. It seems that I needed to update my /etc/rc from /usr/src/etc/rc. Now libgnumalloc.so.2.0 is found in /usr/lib/compat and all is well. :+) I should have known the FreeBSD team wouldn't let this go unfixed. Have I said how much I like FreeBSD current? Its the best O/S I've used (and that includes some big expensive Unices). Great work and many thanks to all involved! Windows 95 will tell you that it is an old file. What other major operating system available today has intelligence that is so artificial?
