Letting appart the fact that you consider early.sh as a hack, it may
still be quite useful as other posts in this thread have shown.

What do you think of something like this:

/etc/defaults/rc.conf:
% inline_early=NO

/etc/rc.d/early.sh
% if checkyesno inline_early; then
%	. /etc/rc.early
% else
%	(. /etc/rc.early)
% fi
