Yes, I have two working with 2.1R.

Yes.
1. There is no write-protect tab. There appears to be some sort of
cartridge write-protect that can be set and cleared via software;
but there is no FreeBSD support for it.
2. Each drive comes with a 'Tools' cartridge. This cartridge is
specially formatted to be readable by both Mac and PC (MS-DOS/
MS-WINDOWS*); and contains some tools and a multi-media show.
The cartridge cannot be written by FreeBSD until the tools are
installed (under PC or Mac OS), or the included 'recover' utility
is run (also under PC or Mac OS).
If you buy spare cartridges, they will be preformatted for either
Mac or MS-DOS, with no data files; and may be used directly out
of the box.
