Sun is broken into separate business units.  SME cares about selling CPUs.
If FreeBSD helps them do that, then great, even if the other business
units don't like it.  An odd arrangement, but until they start losing
money, I imagine things will stay that way...

My boss is specifically interested in seeing FreeBSD run on SPARC.  From a
technical perspective, perhaps NetBSD would be a better starting point,
but I'll take what I can get when it comes to being paid for free software
development. =)
