i found the turkey with a find / -name \*compat22\* /usr/src/lib/compat/compat22 and make followed by make install did it. uh, it seems a bit strange to manually make and install part of the source tree. i had done a make buildworld/installworld. well, thanks for the hint and the patience. randy > I believe it's only distributed as a package.
