I too use 486's of various CPU speeds w/FreeBSD for all my network devices at home. I have three firewalls & two IDS, none of which are better than 486DX-75 (except one IDS is a Pentium overdrive in a 486DX-33Mhz board) and all perform quite well. I haven't actually done any perfromance measuring of a formal nature, but the casual vmstat has never shown me a CPU less than 80% idle. Gotta love old hardware.... :) -- Eric I.
