[-- Attachment #1 --] You're absolutely right about it not being necessary to sync before you unmount, but what I meant was that my experience with IDE hot swapping has been pretty risky when it comes to crashing your entire system as soon as you pull a drive. You'll want to sync for the sake of the other drives in your system so that if your system does crash, those drives will be in a clean(er) state.
