i run with 2Gb of SHM on boxes with 8Gb and 20Gb of RAM respectively,  
and it works just fine.  Much of the database ends up in the I/O  
cache of the system.

That said, I'd like to try higher SHM values too, especially on the  
20Gb box :-)
