You've got the right mailing list.

IDE drives are a bit finicky.  

1.  Make sure you're on 2.1.5, or if you're installing 2.1.0, make sure
you use the "atapi.flp" boot floppy image.  
2.  Make sure the controller is properly configured in UserConfig (boot 
-c)
3.  Try shifting the drive between the IDE channels, and master/slave
positions.

It is possible it's not supported.  Some IDE CDROMs refuse to work, and
the Gateway2000 may be a repackaged one of these.  (I think it was a
Mitsumi that didn't work, not sure)
