It would be much, much easier if you could get the CDs from Walnut
Creek. You could share the cost with a friend (or 2, or 3.....) and
then have the person who offered you to burn the CDs to make copies.
I suggest this because this way you don't have to worry about what
you need to download.

Also the CDs from Walnut Creek have other goodies (packages and
ports) which are not as obvious to download to install.

If you already have a boot manager the answer is yes. Are you using
the Linux boot manager?

My advice is do backups and assume YOU WILL mess up your drive.
Failing that I recommend you try on the second drive.
This has nothing to do with FreeBSD, but with the fact that you will
be playing around with partitions and other related things which do
changes that erase all your data. Sometimes the changes per/se don't
erase the data, but may just not make your computer bootable. The
result is the same. Unless you know how to recover it is as bad as if
you had trashed your data (specially if you don't have access to the
net to read articles/FAQs on how to recover).

The only valid answer to that question is install it, give a try and
get the answers for yourself.
Anything else is just a very subjective opinion of what someone
thinks... bla bla bla.

Read the FAQ/Handbook on what files you need if you were to install
off a FAT partition. This would be the list of files your friend
would need to DL and put on a CD for you. Hopefully others will give
you better advice on this part.

>I haven't a clue where to start!!!

1- Check the FAQ and handbook. Can save you lots of time and
agravation.
2- Backup your data before you do anything with your partitions/boot
record.
3- print anything you think you will need from the FAQ and Handbook
since you may not have access to that once you start trying the
installation.
