Based on an emailed hint, I tried a new kernel with the following
now commented out:
DUMMYNET
IPDIVERT
IPFIREWALL
IPFIREWALL_DEFAULT_TO_ACCEPT
The crashes still continue.
The next thing I will try will be to disable SOFTUPDATES.
