Zak, my co-op student from last term did a bunch of this work; it's in the lua-bootloader branch of https://github.com/ZakSN/freebsd. The work term ended before Warner's rework was ready, but it should be relatively straightforward to rebase it and begin review / refinement. I agree we should support both variants for at least some time.
