My experience was similar. I have been using the 'suggested way' ever 
since fbsd4, never been a problem. I used the same way even to downgrade 
from -current, when Promise support for the ata driver started to appear 
in -stable (but not on this particular box).

What was strange about this failure was that the make installworld build 
just hung.... no error messages no nothing. The box carried on as normal!
