That really sounds bad. But maybe it was just the right thing
to happen now: You've gained the ability (i. e., the only possible
way) to start from scratch. ;-)

Yes, this sounds like a good idea. You will be able to use the
currently available infrastructures for OS updating, as well
as for building the software, which would _not_ be available
on 8.3 natively. Sometimes it's good not to have to deal with
a system that's EOL'ed many years ago...

When you have someone to setup the system and temporarily
attach a "console-to-Internet adapter" (maybe the installation
already offers one of the common solutions?), providing the
installation image and performing the installation should be
easy. Once set up, the system can be accessed directly.
