I found the only way to see a dramatic difference was to do something like a dump across ssh where the session is using 3des. From a PIII 866 to PIII800 without the card sshd would take up to 50% of the CPU on the server. With the hardware acceleration, sshd only uses 3 to 5% and still the same overall throughput. e.g. before 2864 KBytes/sec, after 2955 KBytes/sec. (normal variance is ~100KB so affectivly the same).
