I'm surprised nobody has mentioned: Thinking in Java Bruce Eckel Prentice Hall, 1998 ISBN 0136597238 This is an excellent tutorial for Java as an application language, with limited coverage of the graphics APIs, but useful chapters on threads, networking and other "programming issues". It is available in (free) electronic form at: http://www.eckelobjects.com/javabook.html But I found it so good that I bought the printed version to read when commuting on a train.
