In this case, it's probably wise to make it an internal pseudo-
target, as opposed to a bogus Makefile variable. After all, using the
/usr/obj hierarchy is handled by make(1) internally, and is not
influenced by the Makefile in the first place.
So, make this
.NOOBJ:
, probably accompanied by a command-line option, similar to other
such targets like .IGNORE.
