Yes, had I not understood the local usage, I might not have understood that this was intended to be a friendly offer. On the other hand, as a non-smoker, I found myself distinctly in the minority. I have never seen such a high incidence of tobacco addiction! The Europeans conquered America, but the Native Americans apparently have retaliated by conquering Europe. Even in venues clearly marked as non-smoking (such as the basement of the legendary Tron folk club in Edinburgh), folks couldn't stand the notion of going outside to smoke (or maybe just couldn't wait).
