I'd advise just about anyone who spends any time configuring their mail server to go for one of qmail or exim (www.exim.org). Qmail probably holds the lead in terms of security, Exim on ease of use (it's a lot more sendmail like). Both a *much* easier to configure and give *much* better performance.
