This was my experience, too, when I was bootstrapping with linux-sun- 
jdk-1.4.2.10.  I did not need it later rebuilding with "portupgrade - 
f jdk-1.5.0p2_3".  Tyan S2881 (Opteron 246)/FreeBSD 6.0-RELEASE
