Hi John, [Also cc'ed to -newbies for information as the troubleshooting advice given might prove to be a useful little learning experience] On 16-Nov-98, John Saunders wrote: >> ..and the following error in my console window: >> >> Nov 15 23:55:29 trek /kernel: pid 413 (leafnode), uid 8: exited >> on signal 11 >> >> Trying to run the leafnode program itself (as root) results in >> Segmentation fault (core dumped) > > Sounds like either a disk space problem or possibly corrupted > files in the news spool. A-ha.. Thanks for the tip. I took a guess and examined the groupinfo file: it turns out it had been corrupted and truncated (presumably due to running out of disk space during a rewrite). I renamed it, and restarted leafnode, which then happily retrieved a new newsgroup list from my ISP. :-) It seems a little ungraceful for a program to die horribly in such a circumstance, rather than return an error message, though! Everything seems fine again now, thanks! Apologies for troubling -questions with something that (with a bit of forethought on my part) I ought to have been able to sort out for myself. I just got a little panicked at the thought of being without news: sad, huh? * Lesson for myself for today: if something breaks, check out the config files first, before panicking.. > Have you tried using ktrace on the > program. i.e. > ># ktrace leafnode > [enter commands that make it crash] ># kdump > > P.S. You need "option KTRACE" in your kernel config file. Thanks, I'll bear that tip in mind for future use. This wasn't a feature I was aware of. I guess I'd need a kernel recompile to enable that feature, so I may pass just for now..
