I guess it was a while ago.
Another thing I would try is completely disabling geom tasting (if the system
would still come up after that) or all unneeded geom label classes (see
kern.geom.label) and see if the disk would stay around.  Then you can try
reading from various parts of it.  Those old disks usually start failing from
the end.
