FYI; I just sent in (& received the following ACK for) a PR involving
make in -STABLE.

I could be pretty confused (it's happened before), but if I'm not, the
symptoms involved could be pretty annoying [eliding non-critical
material from the ACK]:

(Known result is a failure to actually make certain (suffix-less, in all
tested cases so far) targets under some conditions, with make claiming it
doesn't know how to make the target(s) in question.  Situation-specific
circumventions appear to work OK, in that the previously-observed failure
doesn't occur.  What else might be affected, I don't know, but I would
expect it to merely affect make's transformation rules (and make's
perception thereof).)
