How is running FreeBSD at layer 2, inside of a layer 1 FreeBSD (host) a valid
configuration, I thought we had no support for nesting.  Does some magic happen
because the layer 0/bare metal host is running KVM?

Now, running FreeBSD at layer 1, inside a layer 0 KVM, I'll agree is valid.
