To follow-up, testkernel mounted fine using the procedure from loader.4th(8): set kernel=testkernel unload boot-conf And the OS upgrade is now done, after a few more tweaks have been ironed out (the most interesting of them is a difference between /boot/testkernel and /boot/kernel, which were supposedly generated by the same 'make' command some time apart). Thanks again for the suggestions, all.
