I don't like it, and I can't figure out what everybody else likes about it.  
I don't like the clip and the huge icons WM puts on the bottom of the screen 
when you minimize an application.

Sounds like you want something easily configured.  Try XFce 
(http://www.xfce.org).  Everything's configured with the mouse.  When you're 
more comfortable with config files, try Blackbox (http://Blackbox.alug.org)
