It's really quite simple once you realize that from
ftp.freebsd.org/pub/FreeBSD/ you have a choice of release
directories. In those directories are RELNOTES.TXT. These will help
you decide which release is right for you. If you have a specific
purpose for using FreeBSD ie ftp, http, etc. pose a question to
FreeBSD-Questions@FreeBSD.ORG if the information you require is not
clear to you in the RELNOTES.TXT.
