The semantics dictated by ELF > are different than those dictated by a.out. Actually, no, it's because gcc was accidently compiled with NO_DOLLAR_IN_LABEL, which came in via svr4.h. So, __vt$8stdiobuf got remapped to __vt.8stdiobuf - the gas that we use doesn't need this hand-holding (unlike the svr4 assembler), so it was fixed 2(?) days ago. Just recompile cc*, and libstdc++ and libg++ and this will be the way it was.
