I wrote to Shigio, and here's his verbatim answer. Based on it, I see no
problem in updating global, as long as the BSD licensed version is used.

OK. I'll make a comment on the question.
I will maintain two versions of GLOBAL: one is BSD GLOBAL and the other
is GNU GLOBAL. But the substance is differ.
BSD GLOBAL
o distributed under BSD style license.
o only bug fixes will be added.
o version 3.55, 3.56, 3.57, ... (doesn't reach to 4.0).
GNU GLOBAL
o distributed under GPL.
o new features will be added.
o version 4.0, 5.0, ... (probably)
I will maintain BSD GLOBAL as long as FreeBSD kept it in the sources.
But I hope FreeBSD community to accept GNU GLOBAL, because it reduce my
job.
Since you have already accepted GNU tools as
contrib/{gcc,bison,binutils,...},
there is no problem to import GNU GLOBAL as a contrib, I think.
By the way, the latest version (GLOBAL-3.55) is BSD style licensed.
If you have any questions, please mail to me.
Thank you.
