You might want to consider writing a "trashcan" script that will move files to a dedicated directory. Then, create an alias called "rm" that calls this script. (You can always type "/bin/rm" if you're sure you don't want to save something -- and you'll want to use "/bin/rm" in your scripts, if you don't want files saved.)
