I saw that message too but my last kernel is 4.5-STABLE, cvsupped
yesterday and I still get the same problem.
What I'm trying to play is a voice mail recording obtained through a
ZyXEL Elite 2864i ISDN Modem/TA which records at 9600 samples per sec.
The raw modem data is converted using rmdtopvf and pvftowav (both are
in the mgetty+sendfax port) to a wav file. File(1) thinks the produced
.wav file is:
RIFF (little-endian) data, WAVE audio, Microsoft PCM, 8 bit, mono 9600 Hz
which looks OK to me. I then play the file using the play command
which is a shell wrapper that comes with the sox port. This works
fine with at least 4 other sound devices I tried so that's why I
hoped it's something in the pcm driver that was corrected for your
version of the ICH sound system but doesn't recognise mine.
For now I can live with this, I just lie to play and tell it that
the file is sampled at 8200 Hz. I don't care much about the audio
quality as I just use it for listening at recorded voice mails, but
perhapes other people get the same problem and do care.

Thanks for your response anyway and hopefully one of the developers
will find a way to make the Dell Inspiron 4100 sing like a bird too!
