I use qmail with pop. Much more software is being configured to deliver and collect mail from /home/<user>/<mailbox>. There are many patched pop/imap servers at www.qmail.org that will fix this problem. Imap is the real security risk I have not had that much trouble with recent pop servers as far as security goes.
