MY original problem was I was using the wrong command to start it.
I checked the port pkg-comment for info on the port and there was
nothing about how to start it. I just guessed on nc.
I had done a rehash but it didn't help of course.
Once someone told me midc was the name on FBSD I got it started.
The only problem I am having now is I can not get the mouse to work in midc.
Yes mouse is in the rc.conf.

The FAQ say
3.1 How do I enable mouse support?
Invoke midc like this (without quotes): "midc -x". If this doesn't work
upgrade to a terminal which is compatible with the Xterm mouse sequences.
Alternatively, on Linux console you can use gpm.

Same results starting with midc -x as with out the -x, mouse does not work.
What do I have to do to make the master root console to act like a xterm
Terminal which is compatible with the Xterm mouse sequences?.

This is not true. The only problem with newly installed programs
under FreeBSD is that the default shell, which is tcsh, uses an
internal 'snapshot' of your $PATH and the files in it. This snapshot
is created when the shell starts up. If you want to update it 'on
    the fly', just type 'rehash'.
The operating system is not concerned at all.
