At one point last summer, I think, the ports collection had samba 2.0.6. Just for kicks, I downloaded the samba-latest.tgz from samba.org (samba 2.0.7), unpacked it, ran configure, make and make install --worked like a charm. Since then I've installed Samba 2.20a on a development machine (from the ports collection, though) and so far it's worked well, too.
