Well, just a followup to all who have provided me with useful info -

I ended up using the NAT built into ppp, and using ipfw to make the 
firewall side of things.  The only thing now is my Alpha now locks up 
totally (network and console) after about 5 minutes of forwarding traffic 
(this is on a dialup line - so nothing too stressful)

<sigh>

Going to try IPFilter next :)
