It didn't make any significant difference:
find /usr/src | cpio -pdum /target (~600k blocks):
/noraid (1 drive, softupdates):
	  901.70s real     6.32s user   135.73s system
	  944.64s real     6.40s user   135.49s system (*MAXACTIVE to 30000)
buildworld -j16:
src & obj on /noraid volume (1 drive, softupdates)
     6053.86 real      7969.94 user      7601.81 sys
     6040.56 real      7933.80 user      7643.17 sys (*MAXACTIVE to 30000)
(The /*raid* volumes are all on the 5 older SCSI disks, but the rest of
the system is on a newer IDE disk, which is why the IDE times are better.)
