Well SIGSEV exiting is not elegant, an error message wuold have been smoother but... The linux password is $2y$, freebsd expects $2$, hence the SIGSEV. Omitting the "y" gives me the correct "sshd[38968]: error: PAM: authentication error for user" and the password is not recognized.
