It works fine through firewire on any recent (since May 2003) FreeBSD.
The earlier Maxtor drives have been working well for much longer: this
model introduces a second unit instance for the button on the front panel,
which required a fix to the driver.

Note that these Maxtor drives are, like all the others available, just a
normal IDE drive in a box with an IDE<->Firewire interface.
