Some KVMs fail to sufficiently emulate a keyboard, causing the system to fail to detect a keyboard if the system is not currently selected on the KVM switch. This can be avoided by removing the 'flags 0x1' portion in the atkbd0 line of the kernel configuration file, then building and installing a new kernel.
