after searching many lists, I found this fix in a linux mailing list.

Section "Device"
    Identifier  "NVIDIA GeForce"
    Driver      "nv"
    #VideoRam    32768
    # Insert Clocks lines here if appropriate
    Option "NoInt10"

apparently on some MB this(Option "NoInt10") is needed.
