It should have both /usr/lib and /usr/lib/aout in the search path, so it should be ok to build on stable. It only needs this to locate the libc so it can scan it for functions. The port package should build on stable with no problems. I'm pretty sure that the functions that it scans libc for are ones that have not changed between 2.1 and 3.x.
