The ports system already does this, and his video chipset is old enough to be supported by the latest release Xorg (if it isn't, then a CVS Xorg won't help.) The OP could post the error messages pertaining to DRI (from /var/log/Xorg.0.log) plus the output from "xdriinfo" and "kldstat". mkb.
