Thanks to all that replied...

I've solved the problem (sort of) - the system reads the config files in the
'wrong' order to do what I want (i.e. it reads the local config first for the
user, then overrides that with the next file etc.)

I have it working at the moment by allowing the client to specify the IP
address... This will get me by for now...
