Well, using FreeBSD I'm usually not getting into this situation ;-) So I had no experience in this field. But I remember that things like that worked in the past ... Well but maybe I used compress ... was in conjunction with amanda where you have a nice header in the compressed file explaining how to unpack and skip over the amanda header using dd ...
