I was not aware K6-II/III were multiplier locked. I can't say I'm
surprised though. I haven't had any direct experience with these AMD chips
but other people on the list say they're quite snappy under FreeBSD.

Yep. It is probably worth mentioning that while any BX board is within
spec at 100MHz, some will handle an "on the edge" chip better than others.
Your statement that buying the 300A instead of higher priced Celerons for
the best performance/price is exactly true IMO. Others could(will?) argue
"just buy a 433/466 and don't worry about it." That is a good option too,
if a little more expensive. The original Celeron post I made was written
when a 333 was about the fastest (Celeron) available.

There is a degree of luck involved, but even if the first 300A doesn't
overclock, you could always sell it at a reduced price, buy a new one which
probably will overclock, and still be cheaper than a 433 or 466. Truth
is.. some just OC better than others. A friend's 300A will not even boot
Windows at 450MHz/2.3v. I'm sitting next to one that runs great at
464MHz/2.1v. I've heard tales of PPGA 300A's that run flawlessly at
504MHz/1.85v!! Note that normal is 2.0v, but the person in question
reduced it for "cooling purposes".

..of course you could also throw your board/cpu into a vat of mineral oil
along with an air conditioner...
